Great Lakes cleanups hampered by
economic woes, bureaucratic hurdles

A most-wanted list of toxic substances—including PCBs, dioxins, mercury, lead
and pesticides—has lingered in western New York’s Eighteenmile Creek for
decades, leaving its salmon, trout and other fish unsafe to eat and jeopardizing
its wildlife.
Now the nation’s sour economy has complicated and delayed the already daunting
cleanup of the Lake Ontario tributary, as well as several dozen other toxic
hotspots around the Great Lakes.

A controversial report exploring the possible link between
industrial pollution and disease in the Great Lakes region includes two area
waterways, one of them a popular Niagara County fishing spot aiming for
federal cleanup dollars.
Reauthorization
of the Great Lakes Legacy Act
On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 10:00
a.m., in room 2167 of the Rayburn House Office Building, the Subcommittee on
Water Resources and the Environment will hear testimony from
representatives from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the
State of Michigan, and stakeholder organizations from the Great Lakes region
on the reauthorization of the Great Lakes Legacy Act.
